Individual project by Editor-in-Chief of our student newspaper “Keeping up with LLIS” Richard MAYER ( mayri261@school.lu ). This is the description of the project idea, to be submitted by 11.11.2024 with the final result being handed in in Februar 2025 by the deadline of this competition. The student would like to explore the challenges faced by the current generation, particularly the youth, who struggle with attention-seeking behavior online and offline, loneliness, and emotional emptiness. The student would like to develop a text that attributes these issues to factors like the dual-income family structure, which limits parental involvement, the impact of consumerism and social media on attention, and a decline in religious or spiritual beliefs that traditionally provided emotional support.
Richard also suggests that the lack of parental time and attention has led to teenagers feeling emotionally neglected, prompting them to seek validation through social media and other attention-seeking behaviors. Additionally, the text project would highlight the role of capitalism, where companies profit by capturing young people’s attention, further disconnecting them from meaningful, real-life interactions.
The project will also explore the decline in spirituality, observing that fewer young people associate with religion, which could otherwise provide a sense of comfort and support during lonely times. In Richard’s thesis, without this support system, some teenagers may feel lost and turn to unhealthy behaviors to cope.
In conclusion, the author would like to argue for a collective societal awareness of these issues. Small acts of empathy and checking in with loved ones can make a difference, and self-care is also emphasized. The author advocates for developing resilience and patience to navigate the complexities of modern life, underscoring the importance of finding a personal sense of purpose and emotional balance
